Persons with outdoor ponds that house fish may want to consider keeping the water warmer and ice from forming on the surface for the health of their fish as well as the for the ecosystem of their watery environment.
In many cases, the choice of a pond heater for de-icing the pond is the most logical, to maintain an open surface for the exchange of gases in the water, but others may choose a pond heater to maintain a uniform temperature to help prevent disease of their fish.
Koi fish especially, are prone to an illness and many of the pathogens that lead to sometimes fatal diseases grow unabated during the spring months when the water begins to warm up. As the temperature increases, the bacteria level also rises, however studies show that in water heated by a pond heater the pathogens have less of an opportunity to grow and infect the fish in the pond.

Most ponds have animals of sorts in and around them. Many man made ponds are filled with fish and other aquatic life forms.
Some ponds are actually made for the enjoyment of pond fishing. For natural ponds, it may be difficult to regulate and monitor the amount of fish in them because you have no idea how many there are. Man made ponds designed for pond fishing are usually filled with fish that multiply fast and are fed for the express purpose of getting fat.
Natural pond fishing on the other hand needs more than just food to lure the fish. Most fish in a natural pond are sensitive to abnormal activities on land and on the water. Vibrations as people come and go near the ponds banks can be sensed by fish in the water. This warns them of people and can scare them away.
The Thrill of Pond Fishing
Unlike fishing in a river, pond fishing can be fun because there is usually a fixed area where you can drop or throw your line. Most ponds are small so the areas where the fish can swim around are limited. Although some ponds are also fed from a source, not all fish would like to go out of the pond and go up the pond's source. Sooner or later after dropping a line, you are most certainly sure to have attracted several fish already with your bait.

Water means life. Whether it is the ocean, a pond, a river or a swamp, water means oxygen, and oxygen means evolution.
Fish vary across the world and across environments. Salt-water fish are vastly different from fresh-water fish, and some fish can only be found on certain continents. Different fish have different needs, from temperature and depth to food and seasons.
For the homeowner planning a backyard garden pool, fish education is an important step of the process. While not every pond will have fish, those that do need to be built according to the type of fish that will populate the water. Pond fish are fragile animals, and if the right fish is not placed in the right pond, it can easily die. Pond fish are part of a complete ecosystem, a small-scale society composed of fish, bacteria, molecules and plants. Fish depend on plants, plants depend on fish, and everything depends on healthy, appropriate water.
